MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, located at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, provides services to patients with brain and spinal cord injury. The institute is affiliated with Case Western Reserve University, and is one of 14 facilities in the country designated as Spinal Cord Model System Program by NIDRR. The institute promotes a goal-oriented approach using an interdisciplinary team focused on returning each patient to maximum function and independence. Cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art technology is a cornerstone of the program, which also partners with the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation Center. A rehabilitative neighborhood called Easy Street Environments allows patients to adapt to real-life situations and includes a restaurant, stores, a bank, and sidewalks. The Drake Center Health Alliance offers long-term rehabilitative care to those who have sustained spinal cord and brain injuries, in addition to offering short-term care, assisted living services, wellness services, and outpatient services. Drake also participates in on-site research studies designed to further a cure for the injuries and illnesses they treat. Facilities include a unique outdoor therapy area, an aquatic center, and an inpatient gym. Care suites that simulate the home environment are also available and help patient adapt to and practice everyday skills. Drake emphasizes teamwork, and supplies an interdisciplinary group of professionals that is able to assess the patient' s needs and develop an appropriate program. Both the patient and the patient' s family are considered a part of the team. Miami Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio is a 39-bed facility that offers a wide variety of rehabilitation services, including those for brain- and spinal cord-injured patients. Each patient has access to a staff comprising physiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, psychologists, counselors, and more. The Spinal Cord Injury Program is focused on helping patients adjust to their injury and learn to adapt to achieve maximum independence. Issues such as skin care, respiratory care, bowel and bladder maintenance, mobility, and sexuality are addressed. The Brain Injury Program recognizes that each injury is different, and so care is highly individualized. Physical and cognitive tests are done on each patient before an individual treatment program is established. Specialists on staff are certified by the American Academy of Brain Injury Specialists.
