About the Author

Meet Catherine Black — TBI caregiver, author, and advocate for brain injury survivors and their families.

Catherine Black
TBI Caregiver & Author

As a dedicated TBI survivor caregiver, Catherine Black has firsthand experience with the challenges and complexities of traumatic brain injury. Her journey began when a family member suffered a severe brain injury, setting her on a path of caregiving and discovery.

Over the course of seven years, Catherine Black developed a system of environmental adjustments and effective interpersonal techniques as a result of her commitment to her family member's recovery.

I learned that behavior is communication. Once I understood that, everything changed.

My Sister's Journey on the Rancho Scale

The Rancho Los Amigos Scale measures brain injury recovery from Level I (no response) to Level VIII (purposeful/appropriate).

My sister went from Level IV (confused/agitated) to Level 7.5 (appropriate behavior with some judgment issues).

That progress didn't happen by accident. It came from understanding triggers, reducing overwhelm, and consistent environmental adjustments — the same methods I now teach in my book.

Following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), Catherine Black observed the common occurrence of emotional seizures experienced by many individuals. These seizures, characterized by uncontrollable verbal and physical outbursts resulting from frustration, can be distressing for all parties involved. However, Catherine Black recognized the importance of effectively managing these outbursts and providing hope for individuals facing such challenges.

Her Books

In her book, "Managing TBI Triggers," Catherine Black delves into the exploration of various triggers that commonly provoke emotional seizures. By offering practical advice and strategies, this resource equips individuals with the necessary tools to effectively manage and reduce the occurrence of these distressing episodes.

In the companion book, "TBI Logbook," Catherine Black shares invaluable tools for TBI survivors and caregivers. The logbook provides a comprehensive framework to record essential factors that impact recovery and quality of life — from symptoms and medication adjustments to environmental triggers and coping mechanisms.
